I had the pleasure of meeting Christopher Barzak a few weeks ago in person on his birthday, then talking to him at the Italian Festival, then sharing a table with him and a few friends at Imbibe downtown. We bonded over writing, editing, and psychology. I was excited to talk to him because he is currently doing what I someday hope to: breaking the world record for longest moustache! Okay, he's not doing that. He's having a book published. Now isn't that better than having facial hair long enough to hang yourself with? Um, well. Aren't most things?
Barzak's book, One For Sorrow, comes out tomorrow, August 28. The official party is Saturday at The Oakland from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. and will feature wine, local art, local vocals, and a reading by Barzak himself. You can also get your copy of the book signed by him. I have heard that August 28 has been declared Chris Barzak World Domination Day, and in a world where a lot of forces seem to be at war for our bodies, our souls, and our paychecks, it's kind of refreshing to be subjugated to someone by literature. Instead of economic oppression, or mind control, he's taking us with a spirited, well-written story.
Which I haven't read yet. But I will be. I heard Barzak recite a few excerpts at The Stage recently, and his quiet, sure voice drew me in and then surprised me. I got chills. I know you think that writing a promotional blog entry for a book I haven't previewed might destroy my credibility. And you might be right. But what do you care, anyways? The world as we know it is ending tomorrow. I just hope Chris - or should I say, our new leader - goes easy on that whole free speech thing. I kind of enjoy it.
In addition, Barzak will be signing books at the following places:
- Borders in Niles, Ohio, September 15, 2-4 PM
- Mac’s Backs in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, September 22, 5 PM
- Youngstown State University Poetry Center Reading, October 2, 7 PM
