In Parentheses

Posted by Alicia on April 10, 2008

Well, after a social networking hiatus, I’m back on Facebook for who knows long again. I had given it up (along with Myspace) early this fall after I started to feel that I just didn’t truly, personally know all 500 of my “friends.” And so I’m back (from outer space, you might say,) at least on Facebook, because one day I was bored. Really that’s it. Living on your own in a new city over a year has its perks, but it also has its drawbacks. Having a hard time meeting new people and missing your old friends is surely one of them. A Broader Scope

Posted by Alicia on March 25, 2008

A friend of mine in Washington (the state, not the District,) Toni, sent me her morning horoscope over email. I received it when I returned to my computer after a workout in my apartment’s tiny gym in the basement. I don’t typically believe in the validity of astrology, but I love Toni, and in the short time while we both lived in Cleveland, her friendship meant a great deal to me and she taught me a little something about openness and trust. What Everyone Needs

Posted by Alicia on March 10, 2008

Two weeks ago my boyfriend went to see “Juno” with me at the Cedar Lee. I was overly excited about the movie ever since viewing the preview before watching “No Country For Old Men” recently. He had, after seeing the preview, said he thought “Juno” would be overly precious, and despite the fact that it was, and that it was also, as my co-worker said, a little contrived, we enjoyed it hugely. Appreciation is the Word

Posted by Alicia on March 2, 2008

And, yet, that was the point at which I started to feel odd and somewhat ashamed of my youth and impatience. Not my age, mind you, or my maturity level which I feel is pretty on-par for being 4 years out of a 6-year college plan. It’s just that I looked around. Loving on the Sadies

Posted by Alicia on March 1, 2008

Since moving to Cleveland, I've taken a renewed interest in finding awesome music I haven't heard before. I've paid attention to more than just the radio. I've looked into local performers. I've asked friends, acquaintances, and people on the street who they are listening to. And some of the answers (like, “The voices,” for instance) were a little creepy. But for the most part my quest has led me to some worthwhile discoveries, including the Sadies. Read more and add a comment

Open and Shut [Universal]Us

Posted by Alicia on February 20, 2008

“So this is how guys [in relationships] talk when their [significant other] isn’t around,” I mused. And then there was some guffawing and maybe general agreement. I couldn’t tell, because I was deep in thought, lost in the tangled reflection that is gender role, behavior, and stereotype. Read more and add a comment

Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road”

Posted by Alicia on February 16, 2008

There are times, I was musing quietly on Valentine’s Day after I received some very disappointing news (and no, it wasn’t about the boyfriend) in which how you are doesn’t matter where you happen to be or where you came from. And the two characters in “The Road,” a father and his young son, are in the same location. Heading in the same direction. Looking back on similar pasts. The father has known life before the despair hit, before survival was just for more anguish. All the son has known is grey, damp, and cold surroundings, and skin that clings to his bones as one of the few articles he’s got to wear. Read more and add a comment

Rebel Without Reason

Posted by Alicia on January 16, 2008

Politician Ron Paul didn’t say mean things, but he is paying for someone else’s racist words, which happened to be published under his name. It’s all quite scandalous and suspicious and I’m not really sure what I think of it. Despite the fact that they weren’t his words exactly – freedom of speech notwithstanding – bigotry is simply unacceptable; it bears his brand and thus he’s holding some responsibility. It is also a testament to the fact that if you are ever The Boss, you may find yourself taking one for The Team. Read more and add a comment

The Need for Change

Posted by Alicia on December 18, 2007

It’s hard to be hopeful about generosity...When someone asks me for money or food on the street (and granted, they usually ask for money,) I always hesitate. I don’t search my pockets, but my heart, in those moments. Those moments before I usually shrug and shake my head and say, “No, I’m sorry, I can’t tonight.” I can’t tonight, and I can’t most nights. I’m a newly transplanted city dweller. I was raised in a rural community just south of Youngstown but spent a lot of time in Youngstown growing up.
