The second day of the dew tour has come and gone, and with it went some amazing moments from the BMX Dirt finals. Coming out on top was 24-year old Cameron White, of Australia. White landed his signature trick, a backflip barspin tailwhip, to secure the victory with a 93.92 score. Fellow Australian Ryan Guettler finished second at 92.50 and Ryan Nyquist of Greenville, N.C. was third at 91.59. The 90-minute final was full of technical tricks, with a 1080 from Guettler and a double backflip from Luke Parslow, who finished sixth. Local rider Anthony Napolitan fell hard on his second run attempting a new trick, a 360 barspin tailwhip, and was unable to rebound for his last run, putting him twelfth. Tomorrow's update will feature the results of the Skateboard Park, Skateboard Vert, and BMX Vert contests, stay tuned.

Paul Rodriguez won the skateboard park event, Olympic Gold medalist Shaun White won the skateboard vert event and Jamie Bestwick won the BMX vert event Saturday in the Right Guard Open.
-
In skateboard park it was a close finish with only .05 points separating the top two athletes. Rodriguez earned an average score of 90.75 and fourteen-year-old Chaz Ortiz placed second with 90.70. Brazilian Rodolfo Ramos, 24, was third with 88.50. “The jam for me is usually where I’m a little better because I don’t have to have the pressure of landing everything first try and I can do more difficult tricks and have a couple tries to do it, “ Rodriguez said. The athletes focused on executing tricks on the rails during the second part of the finals, a 7-minute jam session. The 23-year-old Rodriguez, of Tarzana Calif., landed a technical kickflip backside tailslide down the rail. Chaz, of Chicago, delivered an impressive kickflip frontside salad grind on the rail.

In skateboard vert, White took the lead in his second run, showing finesse and amplitude with a combination of 540’s and 720’s. Many of White’s competitors fell during their runs while attempting to unseat him. The 21-year-old White, from Carlsbad, Calif, earned a score of 92.00. Bucky Lasek, of Encinitas Calif. finished second with 88.25 and Andy Macdonald, Boston, Mass., 87.25.
-
As the last two athletes to ride in the BMX vert finals, Bestwick and Chad Kagy were tied for the lead with 94.50. Bestwick, of Great Britain, executed a flawless run which included a downside tailwhip X up. Kagy, of Gilroy Calif., fell while attempting a double whip flair and placed second. Australian Steven McCann finished third with 93.33.

Exciting news from Cleveland as Colin McRea's corpse rises from the ground to wreak havoc on the alternative sports that dare sully the name of professional competition. Driving the Bonemobile(tm), Colin placed fifth in the Running Over Skateboarders competition with an average score of 70.25. "Grahhhhhhhhhhh," says Colin. Congratulations to McRea and our deepest condolences to the people of Ontario and their late skateboarding team. You will be missed.

Sunday – It was the last day of competition here in Cleveland, and it sure was a treat. The BMX park finals were highlighted with a heated contest between Daniel Dhers, of Venezuela, and Miami’s Mike Spinner, who landed the first ever quad whip in BMX competition. Dhers landed a 720 over the long box jump, a 720 to tailwhip air, and earned a score of 92.67. Spinner placed second with 91.17 and Rob Darden, of Greenville, N.C. was third with 91.17 points.
-
“The scariest was the seven in the long box,” Dhers said. “Every time I jumped it I had a different speed. You think you’re not going to make it because it’s so long.”
-
Spinner said he had been contemplating whether or not he would attempt the quad whip since he arrived at the event and was ecstatic when he landed the trick.

“That was the first time I’ve ever rolled away from it. I am so happy right now,” Spinner said. “I love the progression. That’s what drives me every day to ride my bike. I did what I came to do. I messed up the triple whip on the quarter so if I would have kept going maybe I would have given Daniel a run for the money.”

This concludes our coverage of the 2008 Mountain Dew Action Sports Tour here in Cleveland. Thanks to everyone for checking in all weekend. For pictures and videos checkout www.ast.com
